“I can honestly say that I have never gone into any business purely to make money. If that is the sole motive then I believe you are better off not doing it. A business has to be involving, it has to be fun, and it has to exercise your creative instincts.”
― Richard Branson, Losing My Virginity: How I’ve Survived, Had Fun, and Made a Fortune Doing Business My Way
Our BOS word of the day is Instincts
Have you tested your instincts lately?
Instincts: an innate, typically fixed pattern of behavior in animals in response to certain stimuli
Learning to listen to your instincts takes practice, but I am convinced God sends us many opportunities each and every day. For Christmas, I bought my four-year-old niece a gorgeous pink tutu, so wearing one myself seemed completely out of the question. Wearing a tutu when your over thirty can be scary, right? So the first time I put on a tutu, I felt like a complete idiot.. My hips felt bigger than normal. My perky butt was covered in a mountain of tulle. Not to mention the tutu was too short for a lady my age. But my son said,” Mom you look like a ballerina.” And my heart melted, so I said.” Okay, I guess I will just wear this tutu around the house.. Well that tutu has a mind of her own, and she’s traveled with me just about EVERYWHERE
My Tutu adventures included ….
- Preschool Drop Off
- The Market
As you can see, my tutu really gets around. She’s very versatile. But her true talent is going from a sassy date night look to a Sunday church look in under 5 minutes… Gotta love a great tutu..
A few weeks ago, I came across a tweet from Zappos.com , the online fashion site, asking followers to send in their favorite St. Paddy’s Day selfie photos. I love a good selfie, but green is really not my color. Now blue, that’s my color.. But green, not so much. Green and me just don’t go together. The contest seemed interesting, but I was entirely too busy, so I ignored my instincts. First mistake, by the way! When you ignore your instincts you end up living with regret, or in my case, the voice in my head- I tried to ignore, continued to get louder and louder
The voice said” What about your green workout tank?
“OH Gosh no- that top should never be viewed in public, I screamed out loud.”
What about that bathing suit?
“Well I am not trying to scare people with me selfie, I screamed. Every day, I remind myself to do something I am afraid of, but I am not ready to show my cellulite on Twitter. And not to Zappos.com millions of followers. Yeah, not today..”
What about your favorite green and blue striped skirt?
“I pondered over the thought, and then told myself I didn’t have enough green items to qualify as a green look, so I wouldn’t even enter the contest! Honestly, what’s the point of embarrassing yourself in public for an outfit that doesn’t fit the bill? ” It’s funny how sometimes we can talk ourselves out of amazing opportunities, right?
I have never been one to give up so easily, so for fun, I decided to give it the old college try. I was confident in my green looks, but the photo quality was horrible. Hey, why not kill two birds with one selfie? This imperfect photo could now be filed under ” Fearful item of the day”, so I clicked submit and the waiting game began. Would the public like my photo, or did I just do the stupidest thing EVER?
I finally got a response from Zappos which said” We are glad you are having fun mixing and matching your outfits”
I was satisfied and decide to go on with my day.. But my instincts kept saying ” You could have done better. And my instincts were right. I was happy I stepped outside of my box, but the more I thought it over, I realized I had many amazing green options in my closet that I could use for a selfie. But I was fearful. Would I seem too eager to win the prize with my multiple green entries.. Just because I like my green options doesn’t mean the world will agree. But then I remembered Isaiah 41: 13 which says” For I am the LORD, your God, who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear; I will help you.
So I decided to try again.
Next, I submitted this photo with the title: “You don’t have to look like a green monster on #stpatricksday just add a dose of confidence & chic accessorize.”
Zappos loved this look . but my instincts said ” You can do better”
And I did..
Below is the winning look picked by Zappos.com for the best St Paddy’s day selfie. What do you think? Do you like my tutu?
The lesson I learned
1. Put God First- When you put God first, he will lead you down the right path every single day.. He is the master planner, who will put the perfect connections in your path.
2. Trust Your Instincts- When you unlock your instincts the world is your oyster. Let your God-given instincts lead you today.
3. Don’t Fear Anything- Fear is – False Expectations Appearing Real- If I would have let fear of rejection stop me, I would have never won the grand prize. Don’t talk yourself out of winning. Why be good when you can great..
