Maximize The Moment: Run Over Hurdles

I hope everyone enjoyed lot’s of rest and  had a fabulous weekend..

hurdlesThis morning, my  4-year-old son decided to practice racing through hurdles, like Lolo Jones. Excuse the poor photo quality. I was trying to quickly capture the moment and keep myself from laughing..

Let’s pray, he doesn’t ask to practice tennis on broken glass like Serena and Venus Williams . Thanks ESPN Documentary For the New Problem

The creativity in this kid.

Our BOS Word for the day is : RUN

What does RUN mean to you?

1 Corinthians 9:24-25

24 Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. 25 Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever.

I found so many definitions for the word RUN.  Here are my favorites

To move swiftly on foot so that both feet leave the ground during each stride.
1. To move at a fast gallop.
2. To retreat rapidly; flee
2. To move without hindrance or restraint: dogs that always ran loose.
4. To go or move about from place to place; roam:
5. To migrate, especially to move in a shoal in order to spawn.

6. To move or go quickly; hurry:

7. To go when in trouble or distress:
8. To make a short, quick trip or visit
Do I look like this when I run? Hardly!

Training for a marathon is tough.   It’s only day four, but so far so good. I normally talk to God when I run. Often times, discovering great mysteries too. Like, today I discovered my shirt was too small-Let’s just say, I attacked the V-Day candy this weekend- Oh, the shame.  In the past,  I’ve discovered I didn’t wear enough clothing, or really enlightening things too. But when my run is over, a euphoria takes over my body because it’s finally OVER. Since it’s only day four, I don’t have that runners high thing.. I think that happens around month four..
Today’s learning experience comes from a conversation I had with my son. My son always wants to WALK. Most of the times, he walks PAINFULLY slow, looking at every bird and every tree branch. Don’t get me wrong,  I enjoy nature too.  But he loves to take his time when mom’s in a hurry.  He’s a kid.. He has no sense of urgency. This weekend, we even WALKED his bike to the park. Lawd help me please. Who walks their bike, instead of riding it?? Only My Son. Boy, this was a painful lesson in patience.

So today, while I’m holding a 10 pound bag, he decides he prefers to run to the park.
“But, son I already ran today, I grumbled.”
“Mom, I thought you were training for a marathon my son said.”
“Yeah, someday.”
“Today mom. We Must Run Today , he said!”
By this time, he had already taken off running. . So what’s a mom to do?
You run really fast!
It can be hard to wrap your mind around things when your plans change.. But if you are acting in Love, you will always make the right decision.
So, in that moment, I did the following

  • R-Relax. Relate. Release. – What’s really going on? Don’t let your mind out way your better judgement. You can  overcome and  conqueror these LIMITATIONS.  You are strong enough. Release Limitations. And start running
  • U-Uncomfortable and Unconventional- Training for anything is like going to WAR. You have to prepare, practice, go through hurdles and the list goes on. I just watched the story of Venus and Serena Williams,  and discovered they practiced  tennis on broken glass. Could you imagine this kind of training. They also took boxing, ballet, and tai chi lessons to prepare for the sport of tennis. They also practiced with  baseball pitchers- to develop great arms for serving- .  They did Uncomfortable and Unconventional  training, but the proof is in the results. They are the BEST. Many times the uncomfortable challenges we face are there to help not hinder our results. So embrace the unconventional IMMEDIATLY
  • N- No Complaining – I always encourage my son to be a leader, but in the moment , I wanted to complain-  I planned to walk with the 10 pound  bag, but running with it never crossed my mind. I was ready to complain before I even TRIED. If the bag breaks, at least I now know ” This bag is not made for running.” Instead of complaining, we should encourage others.. I immediately, thanked my son for the suggestion, and said” Wait for me.

So any guesses on what happened? Did we make it to the park

We did.. My son even learned how to jump rope.. And I learned how to run with restrictions. The bag got heavy, but I never gave up. Don’t let anything stop you.. Run over your hurdles today, tomorrow, and the next day.. God has not given us a spirit of fear.. Pray, prepare, and run your race today.
