People think models have it made right? Well what if you are one of the models discriminated against on the runway due to the color of your skin? Doesn’t sound like a charmed life to me. Recently I read a story about a social media activist who is leading the charge during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week to raise awareness about racism in the modeling industry. I have never been a model, but I’m sure there is some truth to this story HERE . If these allegations are true,
I am puzzled why more people aren’t leading the charge to stop this injustice. But it seems a few are speaking out about this issue. Supermodel and cosmetics entrepreneur Iman, 58, has recently released several statements about the dearth of African-American models on the catwalk, telling the New York Times, There is something terribly wrong. We have a president and a first lady who are black. You would think things have changed, and then you realize that they have not. In fact, things have gone backwards.”
I often think of the story of Daniel from the bible, and how he stood up for his beliefs in the lion’s den. I am sure he was nervous, but he still immediately did the right thing.
Here are some of my favorite quotes on character
A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches, and favor is better than silver or gold. Proverbs 22:1
Character is higher than intellect. ~Ralph Waldo Emerson
Laws control the lesser man. Right conduct controls the greater one. ~Chinese Proverb
Character is doing the right thing when nobody’s looking. There are too many people who think that the only thing that’s right is to get by, and the only thing that’s wrong is to get caught. ~J.C. Watts
My Thoughts: It’s simple. There should never be a time that we are so blinded by the hype that we fail to do what is right. Of course it has happened to me, but it is always my prayer that I stand up for what is right. I will be attending New York Fashion Week and I will let be writing about any diversity developments.
Bites of The Day To Ponder:
1. Have you ever had to do a character check in an uncomfortable situation? Maybe at work, school, or in the drive thru! (SHOCKER)
2. Could you face a firing quad of critics like Daniel to stand up for what is fashionable right?
3. If you knew something was wrong would your character let you stand by and be flexible on the issue?
